Official Full Name: CD81 molecule
Also known as: S5.7; CVID6; TAPA1; TSPAN28
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the transmembrane superfamily, also known as the tetraprotein family. Most of these members are cell surface proteins characterized by the presence of four hydrophobic domains. These proteins mediate signal transduction events and play a role in the regulation of cell development, activation, growth and motility. The encoded protein is a cell surface glycoprotein known to complex with integrins. The protein appears to promote fusion of muscle cells and support the maintenance of myotubes. It may also be involved in signal transduction. This gene is located in the tumor suppressor gene region, so it is a candidate gene for malignancy. Two transcript variants of this gene have been found to encode different isoforms.
