Official Full Name: chitinase 1
Also known as: CHI3; CHIT; CHITD
Chitotrisidase is secreted by activated human macrophages and is significantly elevated in the plasma of patients with Gaucher disease. Chitotrisidase expression occurs only in the later stages of differentiation of monocytes into activated macrophages. Human macrophages can synthesize a functional chitotriosidase, a highly conserved enzyme whose expression is strongly regulated. This enzyme may play a role in degrading chitin-containing pathogens. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene have been described.
