Acidic fibroblast growth factor, also known as FGF-1, ECGF, and HBGF-1, is a secretory mitogen that can stimulate the proliferation of all cells of mesodermal origin and cells of neuroectodermal, ectodermal, and endodermal origin. It plays a role in development, regeneration and angiogenesis. Internalized FGF acidic can be transferred to the cytoplasm with the help of Hsp90 and then migrated to the nucleus via its two nuclear localization signals. FGF acidic after PKCδ phosphorylation triggers active output into the cytoplasm, where it is dephosphorylated and degraded. In the cell, FGF acidic acts as a survival factor by inhibiting p53 activity and promoting apoptotic signaling.
