Folate is an essential component of cellular metabolism and DNA synthesis and repair. It participates in the necessary one-carbon transfer reaction and is a vitamin required by both normal and tumor cells. Folate enters cells through two distinct systems: the reduced folate carrier and the folate receptor system utilizing a bidirectional anion exchange mechanism. Folate Receptor alpha (Folate R alpha) is a membrane-bound member of the folate receptor family that facilitates folate transport through a mechanism called phagocytosis, in which the receptor is internalized and then recycled back to the cell membrane.
