gp130 is a 130 kD glycoprotein, which is the signal transduction chain of interleukin-6 (IL-6). The binding of IL-6 to IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) does not cause signal transmembrane transmission, but must bind to two gp130 molecules for homodimerization, which leads to the activation of Jak kinase in cytoplasm and causes signal transmission. The gp130 molecule is expressed in membrane form outside the cell membrane and is also found to exist in soluble form (sgp130) in plasma.
