Official Full Name: hemoglobin subunit delta<br />The delta (HBD) and beta (HBB) genes are normally expressed in adults: two alpha chains plus two beta chains make up HbA, which makes up approximately 97% of total hemoglobin in normal adult life. Two alpha chains and two delta chains make up Hb-2, which together with HbF make up the remaining 3% of adult hemoglobin. Five β-like globin genes were found in a 45 kb cluster on chromosome 11 in the following order: 5′-epsilon-gamma-Agamma-delta-beta-3′. Mutations in the -globin gene are associated with -thalassemia.
