Hepcidin (Hepc) is a regulator of iron metabolism. Hepcidin inhibits the transport of iron ions by binding to ferroportin (FPN) located on the basolateral surface of intestinal enterocytes and the plasma membrane of reticuloendothelial cells (macrophages). Hepc eventually decomposes the transporter in the lysosome, inhibits FPN and prevents the export of iron ions, which are sequestered in the cell.
