Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) was initially found to have a mitogenic effect on cultured hepatocytes. Later, HGF was successively shown to have mitotic effects on endothelial cells, epithelial cells, melanocytes and keratinocytes. Recently, HGF has also been found to promote migration of endothelial cells and epithelial cells. The natural HGF secreted by cells is an inactive single chain, which is cleaved into active enzyme by serine protease in serum. Mature HGF consists of a dimer of two single chains linked by a disulfide bond.
