Official Full Name: mitochondrial ribosomal protein L55
Also known as: L55nt; MRP-L55; AAVG5835; PRO19675
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They are estimated to be composed of 75% protein and rRNA compared to prokaryotic ribosomes, whose proportions are reversed. Another difference between mammalian ribosomes and prokaryotic ribosomes is that the latter contain 5S rRNA. The proteins that make up the mitochondrial body vary widely in sequence and sometimes in biochemical properties across species, making sequence homology difficult to identify. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein. Through sequence analysis, multiple transcript variants encoding two different isoforms were identified.
