Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are used in paints, plastics, foam furniture padding, textiles, rugs, curtains, televisions, building materials, airplanes and automobiles. In general, PBDEs comprise 209 different brominated diphenylether congeners. The diet is an important source of human exposure to PBDEs. According to WHO fish and shellfish were the main contributors to the total daily PBDE-intake in the European countries and Japan, while meats, poultry and related foods were the major contributors to the total daily PBDE-intake in the Canada and USA. Additionally, air and dust are other important sources of human exposure to PBDEs.
