Official Full Name: regulator of G protein signaling 18
Also known as: RGS13
This gene encodes a member of the G-protein signaling regulator family. This protein contains a conserved, 120 amino acid motif known as the RGS domain. This protein attenuates the signaling activity of G proteins by binding to activated GTP-bound G α subunits and acting as a GTPase activating protein (GAP), increasing the conversion rate of GTP to GDP. This hydrolysis allows the Gα subunit to associate with the Gβ/γ subunit heterodimer to form an inactive G protein heterotrimer, thereby terminating the signal. Alternative transcriptional splice variants of this gene have been observed but have not been fully characterized.
