S100 proteins are localized in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of a variety of cells and are involved in the regulation of many cellular processes, such as cell cycle progression and differentiation. The S100 gene includes at least 13 members, which are located on chromosome 1q21. This protein may play a role in the inhibition of casein kinases, and altered expression of this protein has been associated with cystic fibrosis. This antimicrobial protein has antifungal and antibacterial activity.
