Official Full Name: SHC adaptor protein 1
Also known as: SHC; SHCA
The gene encodes three major isoforms that differ in activity and subcellular location. Although all three proteins are adapter proteins in the signal transduction pathway, the longest (p66Shc) may be involved in the regulation of lifespan and the role of reactive oxygen species. The other two isoforms, p52Shc and p46Shc, link activated tyrosine receptor kinases to the Ras pathway by recruiting the GRB2/SOS complex. p66Shc is not involved in the activation of Ras. Unlike the other two isoforms, p46Shc targets the mitochondrial matrix. Several transcript variants of this gene have been found encoding different isoforms.
