The protein encoded by this gene is expressed in the brain, primarily in the parietal and frontal cortex and the dorsal root ganglia. It localizes to peroxisomes and is associated with protection against oxidative stress. It may work by increasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, but has no direct SOD activity itself. Studies in mice have shown that this gene lowers the seizure threshold and may also enhance epileptogenesis.
