Cyclophilins (CYPs) are a family of proteins named after their ability to bind to ciclosporin (cyclosporin A), an immunosuppressant which is usually used to suppress rejection after internal organ transplants. CyPA is believed to have important roles in many biological conditions including protein folding, trafficking, and T-cell activation (Table 1). Although CyPA is present intracellularly, it can be secreted from cells in response to inflammatory stimuli such as hypoxia, infection, and oxidative stress.
