Transplantation is a surgical procedure in which an organ/s, tissue or group of cells are removed from one person (the donor) and transplanted into another person (the recipient), or moved from one site to another in the same person. Organs that have been successfully transplanted include the heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas, intestine, thymus and uterus. Tissues include bones, tendons (both referred to as musculoskeletal grafts), corneae, skin, heart valves, nerves and veins. In the field of organ transplantation, the establishment of animal transplantation models is an important tool for the study of rejection, graft vasculopathy, and the study of basic mechanisms related to transplantation.
