Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) is a technique that uses an electric current to separate macromolecules such as proteins or nucleic acids according to their electrophoretic mobility, that is, the ability of analytes to move towards an electrode of the opposite charge. The electrophoretic mobility of analytes is determined by the charge, size (molecular weight) and shape of the molecule. PAGE is widely used in biochemistry, forensic chemistry, genetics, molecular biology and biotechnology for protein detection and analysis, electrophoretic mobility shift assay, extraction for mass spectrometry.
