When the light scattering is located at or close to its molecular absorption band, the scattering intensity may be greatly increased by the scattering - absorption - rescattering process, which is called resonant light scattering. Its classification includes: resonance Raman scattering and resonance Rayleigh scattering. Resonance Rayleigh scattering is used for the determination and characterization of biological macromolecules such as nucleic acids, proteins, and sugars. It can also be used for the determination of trace amounts of inorganic ions (metals, non-metals), drugs, and organic substances, and generally has high sensitivity and good selectivity.
