UV transilluminators are used in molecular biology laboratories, it offers the researcher uniform and intense sources of ultraviolet light (radiation) in a compact package to view DNA, RNA, and protein that has been separated by electrophoresis through an agarose gel. UV transilluminators include a 254 nm, 302 nm or 365 nm light excitation source for quantitative fluorescent imaging of DNA, RNA or protein samples. Exposing the stained gel to a UV light source causes the DNA to fluoresce and become visible. These instruments are useful for viewing samples to size a PCR product, purify DNA segments after a restriction enzyme digest, quantify DNA, or verify RNA integrity after extraction.
