X-ray spectrometry technology relies on energy level conversion to produce data. In this process, beams of charged particles are used to excite atoms. Once excited, the electrons are forced to move to a higher energy level. When the electron returns to its pre-excitation energy level, the energy is released in the form of a photon. A special instrument called an X-ray spectrometer is used to measure the unique wavelengths and radiation dispersion patterns of these photons. The data is used to identify different elements in a substance, determine concentrations and map atomic structures. By analyzing wavelengths falling in the X-ray region of the electromagnetic spectrum, the technology provides insight into the structure, chemistry and elemental characteristics of matter.
