Detection of Naphthoquinones in Plant Tissues

Naphthoquinones are naturally widespread secondary metabolites of plants. Naphthoquinones have many physiological roles, the most important ubiquitous naphthoquinones are vitamins of the K group—phylloquinone and menaquinone. In addition, they are able to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are involved in many cellular processes and serve as signal molecules in apoptosis/programmed cell death. Plenty of naphthoquinones are important phytoalexins, so they play an important role in ecological relationships.

Due to the antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiprotozoal, antiparasitic, and cytotoxic properties, naphthoquinones have shown a wide variety of pharmacological value, especially in the treatment of various types of cancer.

STEMart is able to identify the composition and determine the content of naphthoquinones in the plant tissues.
