Differential Thermal Analysis

Differential thermal analysis (DTA) is a technique that measures the difference in temperature between a sample of material to be characterized and a reference material as a function of time. During this measurement, both test material and reference material are exposed to the same heating or cooling program, and differential temperature is recorded and then plotted against time, or against temperature (DTA curve). Identification of substances or determination of the composition structure, conversion temperature, thermal effect and other physical and chemical properties of the test materials is accomplished by comparing DTA curves obtained from the test and reference materials. The DTA technique is widely used for identifying minerals and mineral mixtures.
