Hip Joint Prostheses Testing

STEMart performs a variety of testing for partial and total hip joint prostheses to measure how they will withstand different levels of fatigue, compression, torsion, and bending over an extended period of time.

Applicable Standards

  • ASTM
  • ISO

Test Capabilities

  • Fatigue Testing
    • Hip stem fatigue testing
    • Femoral neck fatigue testing
    • Insert fatigue testing
  • Torsion Testing
  • Compression Testing: Determine the static compressive or tension loads which cause failure of the femoral neck and head assembly.
  • Deformation Testing: Determine the diameter of acetabular shell in loading direction prior and while loading as well as after unloading.
  • Disassembly Force Determination
    • Determine the force required to disassemble taper connections of modular prostheses;
    • Determine the force required to disassemble modular acetabular devices.
  • Impingement Testing: Quantitatively assess the damage modes after simulate dynamic impingement between femoral and acetabular components in a hip prostheses.
  • Fretting Corrosion Testing: Measure the production of corrosion products after mechanical fatigue testing to determine the amount of surface deformation and debris generated.
  • Range of Motion Assessment
  • Wear Testing: Characterize the tribological properties of a hip implant system by simulating walking kinematics.

STEMart provides a variety of testing services to address fatigue properties of load bearing members, disassembly forces between mating components, range of motion between articulating and sliding components, and wear debris generated from relative motion.
