Description

AAO is an acronym for "anaerobic anoxic oxidation," a process that occurs in some sewage treatment plants. In this process, anaerobic bacteria oxidize ammonium ions (NH4+) in wastewater to produce nitrite ions (NO2-) and nitrate ions (NO3-). The process is commonly used to treat wastewater with high ammonium content, such as that from food processing plants and livestock farms. The AAO process typically occurs in the anoxic zone of a wastewater treatment plant, where little or no oxygen is present. In this environment, certain types of anaerobic bacteria, known as "nitrite oxidizing bacteria," are able to use ammonium ions as a source of energy and convert them into nitrite and nitrate ions. This process helps to reduce the ammonium levels in the wastewater and also reduces the odor of the wastewater. The AAO process is often used in combination with other wastewater treatment processes such as the activated sludge process or the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) process. Together, these processes can help effectively remove various pollutants from wastewater and produce treated water that meets required standards for discharge into the environment.
