Measurement of Chromium(VI) by Ion Selective Electrode (CAT#: STEM-ACT-0112-WXH)

Introduction

Chromium (VI) is an oxidation state of the element chromium. Other common oxidation states of chromium include 0 (the metallic element chromium), and III (the state in which chromium is found in nature. Chromium (III) compounds are dealt with elsewhere in the NPI). Hexavalent chromium compounds (VI) include ammonium dichromate, barium chromate, calcium chromate, chromium trioxide, lead chromate, sodium dichromate, strontium chromate, potassium chromate, potassium dichromate, sodium chromate, and zinc chromate.
Chromium VI compounds are classified as Carcinogenic Category 1A, which means they are a proven cause of cancer in humans. Chromium VI exposure occurs through breathing it in, ingestion via food or water, or direct contact with the skin.

Principle

An ideal ion-selective electrode (I.S.E.) consists of a thin membrane across which only the intended ion can be transported. The transport of ions from a high conc. to a low one through a selective binding with some sites within the membrane creates a potential difference.

Applications

• Used for the potentiometric determination of several anions (fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide ion) and cations (sodium, potassium, calcium ion).
• Used for endpoint detection in potentiometric titration.
• In biochemistry, ion selective electrodes are used for the determination of enzymes and substances which interact with enzymes.

Procedure

1. Preparation of Standards
2. Instrument Setup and Operation
3. Analysis of sample
