“Metabolomics” is the “omics” buzzword in the field of systems biology, joining genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics. The “metabolome,” the complete set of small (typically less than 1 kDa) molecules (metabolites) present in cells in a particular physiological or developmental state, is said to be closest to the phenotype; thus, metabolomics is poised to play a critical role in understanding intricate biochemical and biological systems. CE–MS represents a viable platform for metabolomic studies.
