Mitochondrial DNA sequencing is a useful tool for studying human diseases such as diabetes, certain cancers, and mechanisms of aging. It is also used in population genetics and biodiversity assessments, as well as forensics. Targeted mitochondrial sequencing can be used to detect mutations present in some copies of the mitochondrial genome (heteroplasmic mutations).
Sanger sequencing is the gold standard of sequencing technology: it provides high accuracy, long-read capabilities, and flexibility to support a diverse range of applications. Sanger sequencing is mostly known for DNA sequencing applications, but also supports applications in RNA sequencing and epigenetic analysis.
