Organic Functional Group Analysis

Functional groups in an organic compound determine its chemical properties. They undergo a structural change during a chemical reaction and influence the solubility of the compound in water or in organic solvents. Common functional groups include hydroxyl group, carboxyl group, ether bond, aldehyde group, carbonyl group and so on. Functional groups such as -X, -OH, -CHO, -COOH, -NO2, -SO3H, -NH2 and RCO-, determine the chemical properties of halogenated hydrocarbons, alcohols or phenols, aldehydes, carboxylic acids, nitro compounds or nitrites, sulfonic acids, amines and amides.

Test Capabilities

  • Testing of alkane: identification based on physical constants (boiling point, density, refractive index, etc.) and spectral characteristics
  • Testing of olefins and alkynes: carbon tetrachloride test of bromine and potassium permanganate test
  • Testing of halogenated hydrocarbon: silver nitrate alcohol solution test and the sodium iodide-acetone solution test
  • Testing of organic oxygen-containing compounds
    • Testing of alcohol compounds
    • Testing of phenolic compounds: Ferric trichloride test and bromine water test
    • Testing of carbonyl compounds
    • Testing of carboxylic acids: potassium iodate-potassium iodide test, and iron hydroxamate test
    • Testing of carboxylic acids derivatives: iron hydroxamic acid test
    • Testing of organic nitrogen-containing compounds
      • Testing of amine compounds: Hinsberg test and the nitrous acid test
      • Testing of nitro compounds: ferrous hydroxide test and sodium hydroxide acetone test
  • Testing of organic sulfur compounds
    • Testing of mercaptan and thiophenol
    • Testing of sulfonic acids

Test Applications

  • Determine the solubility of different organic compounds.
  • Determine the reactivity of functional groups with various test reagents.
  • Identify an unknown organic compound based on its functional group.

STEMart can perform quantitative/qualitative elemental analysis to determine functional groups present in the molecule with a variety of methods such as chemical method, UV spectrophotometry, NMR spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, chromatography, chromatography-mass spectrometry, electrochemical analysis and other methods.
