Introduction

Mass spectrometry (MS) is an analytical technique that separates ionized particles such as atoms, molecules, and clusters by using differences in the ratios of their charges to their respective masses, and can be used to determine the molecular weight of the particles.The results are presented as a mass spectrum, a plot of intensity as a function of the mass-to-charge ratio. A mass spectrum is a type of plot of the ion signal as a function of the mass-to-charge ratio. These spectra are used to determine the elemental or isotopic signature of a sample, the masses of particles and of molecules, and to elucidate the chemical identity or structure of molecules and other chemical compounds.
The basic principle of mass spectrometry (MS) is to generate ions from either inorganic or organic compounds by any suitable method, to separate these ions by their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) and to detect them qualitatively and quantitatively by their respective m/z and abundance.
