β-lactam refers to a class of organic structures containing a quaternary lactam ring. Beta-lactam structures are commonly found in antibiotics, including penicillin and its derivatives, cephalosporins, monoamide rings, carbapenems and penem enzyme inhibitors. Virtually all antibiotics that include beta-lactam nuclei in their molecular structure belong to the beta-lactam class of antibiotics.
