The simplest elements of secondary structure of nucleic acids are hairpins or stem loops. These are critical to the formation of the secondary and tertiary structure in nucleic acids as well as to their function. Short oligonucleotide hairpins form on microsecond time-scales and thus are well suited for kinetic studies using laser T-jump methods.
