Proflavin is one of the novel acridine derivatives. The acridine derivatives were first developed as dyes and during the early 20th century their pharmacological properties were evaluated. At this time proflavin was used as a topical antibacterial and antifungal agent. This novel acridine derivative is well known for its disinfectant bacteriostatic property against many gram-positive bacteria. It is used as the topical antiseptic in the form of dihydrochloride and hemisuphate salts, and was formerly used as a urinary antiseptic. The roles of proflavin as a mutagen and as an enzyme inhibitor have been extensively studied.
