Microfiltration (MF) is a pressure-driven physical process of separating material from a feed solution. This technology is used to remove particulate and microbial contaminants, but not ions (salts) and small molecules (under 1000 Daltons). As a pressure-driven process, typically the pressure is between 0.5 bar and 2 bar. The service life of MF membranes is 3-6 years or more, and MF modules are available in various types of configurations, such as hollow fiber, tubular, flat sheet and spiral wound.

The MF membrane rejects solutes from 0.1 um (100 nm) and larger (0.5 um). Ultrafiltration machines separate molecules in solution based on size. Pore size and molecular weight cut off (MWCO) are commonly used to characterize membrane properties. Pore size refers to the nominal diameter of the openings or micropores on the membrane, expressed in microns or nanometers. MWCO refers to the molecular weight or mass of a solute whose rejection rate is greater than 90%. The unit of measurement for MWCO is the Dalton (D).

Different membrane materials with the same nominal MWCO may exhibit solute rejection. It is not the chemical properties of the membrane material that cause this effect, but the pore size distribution and uniformity.
