Rat Home Behavior Observation Box, model PhenoTyper is manufactured by Noldus Information Technology BV.
PhenoTyper is an instrumented observation cage to measure and test the behavior of laboratory rodents. Every cage is equipped with a top unit that contains LED units, a camera, and a range of optional sensors and stimuli.
Furthermore, you can automatically switch on a light whenever your animal enters a certain zone or illuminate the food hopper in the dark period when the animal has been eating or drinking for a certain time.
The uniform design of the PhenoTyper combined with the automatic measurements with EthoVision XT creates a valid and consistent collection of data.
Walls are transparent but can optionally be replaced by (partially) opaque/matted walls to reduce reflection, which is useful for specific studies.

There is not just one PhenoTyper, there is only your PhenoTyper. The size, walls, and add-ons can be adjusted to your specific preferences and needs. Due to this flexibility, the PhenoTyper can be used for a variety of long- and short-term tests. Having a PhenoTyper in your lab allows you to use one device for these types of observations.
You can use multiple PhenoTypers simultaneously to increase the throughput of your experiment.
Once the subject is well adjusted to its cage it will experience less stress during the experiment.
Consistency is key considering repeatability.
The PhenoTyper was developed with EthoVision XT in mind and thus is the ideal tool to perform video tracking.
The optic fiber devices (such as Prizmatix) can be easily built into the PhenoTyper.
