The interaction between HCl and the membrane surface can be studied by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The temperature of the film ranges from 90 K to a maximum of 150 K, at which point the water begins to desorption rapidly. Under all the conditions studied, HCl is rapidly and completely dissociated to obtain solvated ions.
