Derived from the lung tissue of a female Chinese hamster, the cell was formerly known as the V cell strain. In 1958, Elkind renamed it V79 and used it to study X-radiation-induced damage and repair of cultured mammalian cells. The immunoglobulin product and Epstein-Barr virus expression were negative. The cells express Fas antigens and are sensitive to TNF and anti-Fas antibodies.
