Zearalenone (ZEN) , also known as RAL and F-2 mycotoxin, is a potent estrogen metabolite produced by certain fusarium and gibberellum species. Zearalenone is a major toxin that binds to estrogen receptors and can cause sterility, miscarriage or other breeding problems. In addition, zearalenone is heat resistant. Its production increases when the climate is warm and the air humidity is 20 percent or more. In addition to its effect on classical estrogen receptors, zearalenone has been found to act as an agonist for GPER (GPR30).
