The inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) family comprises a group of evolutionarily conserved inhibitors of apoptosis that contain a conserved 70 amino acid BIR (baculovirus inhibitor repeat) domain. Human protein members of this family include c-IAP1, c-IAP2, XIAP, surviving, livin, and NAIP. Members of the IAP family are overexpressed in cancer cell lines and primary tumors, and these proteins play an important role in cancer progression.
