Official Full Name: dynactin subunit 3
Also known as: DCTN22; DCTN-22
This gene encodes the smallest subunit of dynactin, a macromolecular complex of 10 subunits ranging in size from 22 to 150 kd. Dynein associates with microtubules and cytoplasmic dynein. It is involved in a variety of cellular functions, including endoplasmic reticulum to Golgi transport, centripetal movement of lysosomes and endosomes, spindle formation, cytoplasmic division, chromosome movement, nuclear localization, and axonogenesis. This subunit, like most other dynein subunits, exists only as part of the dynein complex. It is primarily a helical protein with few helical proteins and directly binds the largest subunit of dynein (p150). Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
