Official Full Name: phosphatidylinositol glycan anchor biosynthesis class C
Also known as: GPI2; MRT62; GPIBD16
This gene encodes an endoplasmic reticulum-associated protein involved in the biosynthesis of glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) lipid anchors. The GPI lipid anchor is a glycolipid found in many blood cells and is used to anchor proteins to the cell surface. The encoded protein is a subunit of GPI n-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) transferase, which transfers GlcNAc to phosphatidylinositol (PI) on the cytoplasmic side of the endoplasmic reticulum. For this gene, two alternatively spliced transcripts encoding the same protein have been found. A pseudogene on chromosome 11 has also been identified.
