Official Full Name: ribosomal protein S24
Also known as: S24; DBA3; eS24
The ribosome is an organelle that catalyzes protein synthesis and consists of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits consist of 4 RNAs and about 80 structurally distinct proteins. The ribosomal protein encoded by this gene is a component of the 40S subunit. This protein belongs to the S24E family of ribosomal proteins. It is located in the cytoplasm. Multiple transcript variants of this gene have been found encoding different isoforms. As a typical gene encoding ribosomal proteins, multiple processing pseudogenes of this gene are scattered throughout the genome. Mutations in this gene cause Diamond-Blackfan anemia.
