Official Full Name: S100 calcium binding protein A7
Also known as: PSOR1; S100A7c
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the S100 protein family, which contains two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs. S100 proteins are localized in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of a variety of cells and are involved in the regulation of many cellular processes, such as cell cycle progression and differentiation. The S100 gene includes at least 13 members, which are located on chromosome 1q21. This protein differs from other S100 proteins of known structure in that it lacks the calcium-binding ability of an EF-hand at the N-terminus. The protein is overexpressed in proliferative skin diseases, has antibacterial activity against bacteria, and induces immunomodulatory activity.
