Concanavalin A (Con A) is a plant lectin that is purified from jack beans. Con A binds to the mannose residues of various glycoproteins and activates lymphocytes. When Con A is administered to mice, liver injury that depends on the activation of T lymphocytes by macrophages occurs. A disulfide-linked conjugate of concanavalin A (Con A) and fragment A from diphtheria toxin has been synthesized and shown to be toxic for HeLa (human), Chinese hamster ovary (CHO), and SV3T3 (murine) cells.
