The Variable (V) domain is a type of structural unit (domain) that, with the Constant (C) domain, characterizes a protein chain belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF).
IgG is composed of four subclasses: IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4. IgG subclass deficiency is notably related to many diseases causing recurrent bacterial and viral infections (often respiratory). It is therefore critical to distinguish recurrent infections caused by viruses from those due to antibody deficiency.
