The Becton Dickinson Serum-Fuge 2001 Centrifuge is a compact single-speed (3100-3500 rpm) tabletop centrifuge specifically designed to process clinical samples and facilitate blood testing procedures. It has a number of nice features, including a lid safety latch that prevents the centrifuge from spinning when the lid is open, and a locked mode when the lid is closed that prevents the lid from opening until the centrifuge comes to a complete stop. The centrifuge is easy to transport and the fully assembled rotor is already in the unit. The 12 rotors can accommodate serum tubes (75mm x 10mm), Kahn tubes (75mm x 12mm) and 75mm x 13mm tubes. Becton-Dickinson also offers 8 and 6 position rotors to accommodate different types of pipes. In addition to the above tubes the 8-position rotor can accommodate vacuum blood collection tubes 64mm x 10.25mm tubes 82mm x 10.25mm tubes 100mm x 13mm tubes and 103mm x 10.25mm tubes. The 6-position rotor can accommodate 100mm x 13mm and 103mm x 10mm tubes.
The Becton Dickinson Sero-Fuge 2001 centrifuge is relatively easy to operate, as controls and indicators are conveniently located on the keypad display on the front panel of the machine. The result of a key press is a positive ? sound. The display shows i) the cycle time, which is how long the motor takes to accelerate and ii) the digital tachometer reading revolutions per minute (RPM). The display can cycle between the two readings by pressing the tachometer reading key. The numeric keypad is used to enter the desired cycle time, which can be set to 99 minutes and 99 seconds. There is also an alarm key (which can be turned on or off) to alert the user when the rotation is complete. At the end of the spin, the centrifuge has an effective brake that slows down the spin for a short period of time. However, this braking can be easily enabled/disabled with a single key displayed on the keyboard. If the user wants to stop spinning before the loop time expires, he or she can press the stop spinning loop key. Conveniently, there is a repeat key that allows the user to set the cycle time to match a previous run without having to enter the numerical time value again.
Maintenance of the Beckton Dickinson Serum-Fuge 2001 centrifuge requires the user to regularly check the speed to ensure it is within the limits of the machine. This can be checked with any accurate photoelectric tachometer by the ability to load either rotor. The machine speed can then be compared to the limits specified in the manual. Becton Dickinson recommends checking at least twice a year. If readings are out of limits, AC power should be checked.
The Beckton Dickinson Serum-Fuge 2001 Centrifuge is a compact, lightweight centrifuge for everyday applications. It is relatively easy to operate, produces very little noise, and is suitable for any area of the laboratory. It also contains handy features such as alarms, active dynamic braking that can be turned on or off and repeat keys to reuse the same cycle time without having to enter the cycle time again. It's also easy to put in different types of rotors to fit different types of pipes. Such devices are routinely used in modern laboratories around the world.
