The anthracyclines are a group of chemotherapeutics that include Adriamycin (doxorubicin), daunorubicin, idarubicin and epirubicin, and which have been widely used in the clinic since the 1960s. Adriamycin is active against a broad range of tumours and is now commonly used in the treatment of breast cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, lung cancer, multiple myeloma and re-occurring ovarian cancer. Adriamycin remains the anti-cancer agent with the widest spectrum of anti-tumour activity; however, resistance and side effects are major limitations to the success of Adriamycin therapy.
