The glomerulus is a blood filter. The capillary wall of the glomerulus forms a filtration membrane. When circulating blood passes through the glomerular capillaries, water and small molecular solutes in the plasma, including a small amount of plasma protein with smaller molecular weight, can filter into the lumen of the renal capsule to form a filtrate.
