Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c, A1C, Hb1c; Sometimes abbreviated as HbA1c) is the product of the combination of hemoglobin in the red blood cells of the blood with glucose. It is often used as a reference for the average plasma glucose concentration over a period of time. In general, the proportion of hemoglobin that is glycosylated is proportional to the level of plasma glucose concentration over a period of time.
Hba1c is measured primarily to determine three-month average blood sugar levels, used as a diagnostic test for diabetes, and can also be used as an assessment test for blood sugar control in patients with diabetes.
