Introduction

Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, or alcohol, a member of a class of organic compounds that are given the general name alcohols. Its molecular formula is C2H5OH. Ethanol is an important industrial chemical; it is used as a solvent, in the synthesis of other organic chemicals, and as an additive to automotive gasoline (forming a mixture known as a gasohol). Ethanol is also the intoxicating ingredient of many alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, and distilled spirits.




Principle

The boiling point of a compound is the temperature at which it changes from a liquid to a gas under a certain pressure. This is a physical property often used to identify substances or to check the purity of the compound. Boiling point is the temperature at which the vapor pressure of the liquid exactly equals the pressure exerted on it, causing the liquid to "boil" or change to the gas phase. If the volume of the liquid is large, its boiling point can be determined by distillation.
