Synthetic Sudan dyes (I, II, III and IV) are widely used as coloring agents in chemical industries such as oils, plastics, waxes, petrol, shoes, printing inks, floor polishing and spirit varnishing, etc. For many years they had been also widely employed as an additive in foods, particularly in those containing chilli powders, because of their intense red–orange color. However, now its use as food additives is prohibited worldwide, for its cancerogenity.
